what is shiatsu?

shiatsu (japanese: shi = finger, atsu = pressure) is a form of body therapy developed in japan, which has its roots in chinese medicine (TCM). the treatment (similar to a massage) stimulates the energy flow in the body. blockades dissolve and our self-healing process is activated. focused on the holistic approach, a shiatsu treatment has a beneficial effect on body and mind.

when and for which complaints is shiatsu suitable?

beside a relaxing and also preventive benefit, a variety of conditions can be treated with shiatsu, such as:

  • muscular tension (f.e. back-, neck- and shoulder pain)

  • sleeplessness

  • digestive problems

  • nervousness, everyday’s stress

  • low energy and tiredness

  • acute and chronic pain

  • cycle and menopause problems

shiatsu is also used as a complementary therapy form for:

  • pregnancy

  • difficult phases in life

sequence of a shiatsu-treatment

during a shiatsu session the client lies on a mat (japanese futon), while wearing loose, comfortable clothing. as working technique for the therapist, fingers, knuckles, thumbs, palms, elbows and knees are used. the clients body will be stretched and rotated in a rhythmical process. the focus on the work is on balancing the meridians and stimulate blocked energy.

a further relaxing approach is the moxa-therapy, where different parts of the body or acupuncture points are warmed up with a moxa stick, which contributes to the overall well-being.
